BILLY DEE WILLIAMS  AS SCOTT JOPLIN IN THE SCOTT JOPLIN MOVIE

In this movie, you see what is called a "cutting contest" where pianists duel to see who could outplay the other. The white gentleman who asked if anyone has heard the music is music publisher John Stark, who made Scott Joplin famous. The guy in the hat is Louis Chauvin, who beats Joplin at his own tune even though he's only heard it once. Chauvin was considered one of the best composer/performers of the day, but he never learned to read music, so little of his work was ever written down.

The older gentleman who tells Scott Joplin (Billy Dee Williams) to play the song in A-flat is the wonderful and fabulous ragtime pianist Eubie Blake.
