Almeta Crayton and Bernice King, Martin Luther King Jr.’s DaughterFirst Ward Councilwoman Almeta Crayton

Works at the Successful Neighborhood Resource Center, 212 Lincoln Drive, for the Boone County Community Partnership and as a school cafeteria aide.

Re-elected in 2005 after running unopposed for a third term, Crayton seeks to be a strong advocate for the central city ward, pushing for more community involvement, city financial support and drug rehabilitation programs. During her first term, she helped residents organize against drug problems and pushed for ways to fight neighborhood degradation and crime.Crayton also has helped bring computers to her ward and facilitated relationships between service providers, employers and her constituents. She is pushing to establish business overlay districts in the central city to encourage commerce and grass-roots capitalism.

The First Ward in Columbia, Missouri is where the majority of African Americans live.  There are projects or public housing located in this area.  The Black park is called Douglass Park.  And there is a center called the Blind Boone Center which has activities for young people.  Unfortunately, the other areas of Columbia have a disdane for the First Ward.  In their mindset, they believe that all of the ills and crime in Columbia are caused in this area or by people from this area.

The First Ward is only a few blocks from Downtown Columbia.  As an African American, you can visit the stores in the downtown area and watch the sales people and owners of businesses treat you like a common thief.
